Michael & Sunny

Dear Birth Parents,

We are Michael and Sunny. We are glad to have our life paths cross on this post. We aren’t sure if we have the appropriate words to describe what this adoption placement journey is like for you. However, we can confidently say that we are thinking about you and praying for you and the little one. Please take a moment to get to know us and to see if we might be the adoptive parents you would choose for your little one. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions or concerns you might have. We will be happy to address them.

Why Adoption?
We have been married for 16 years now, but we have known each other for 19 years (Where did the time go?). After many attempts of trying to expand our family, and the subsequent letting go of the things we could not control in our lives, we have chosen the adoption journey because it is the right time and place in our lives for us to pursue it. We have found supportive social workers and a trusting and solid adoption agency. We hope and dream that our wish to expand our family from just two of us to 3 or more comes true. With the blessing of adopting a child, we hope to complete our family puzzle. Obviously, you are a huge part of the complete puzzle.

Who Are We?
Michael is a music teacher and Sunny is a Reading and English as a Second Language teacher. Michael is Caucasian-American (German Heritage) and Sunny is Asian-American (Korean Heritage), very obvious from our profile picture! We were teaching at the same school when we first met 20 years ago and the rest is history. Together, we have taught in three different international schools. Teaching internationally brought us closer as a couple since we get to have the same vacation times and have opportunities to travel together to many different places. We value family time so we do lots of things together as a couple. But, we also respect and support each other’s interests and hobbies. Michael is looking forward to becoming a Dad and bringing home the bacon for the little one and Sunny, once the adoption takes place, and Sunny is looking forward to becoming a full-time stay-at-home mom.

What Is the One Question We Would Like to Be Able to Answer?
The one question that our students and parents frequently ask us is, “How many children do you have?” or “Do you have any children?” Our answers have been, “We have 233 children!” (or whatever the number of students we teach is) or “You are all my children.” We do think and treat our students as our own children. But, it would be really nice if we could add one more answer to these questions, “We have you and we have another one at home! He/She is just adorable as you are!”

Sunny in Michael’s Eyes
Sunny is one of the most selfless and caring people I have ever met. She is always thinking about how she can help others and doing what she can to make others feel welcomed, comfortable and appreciated. Her students wait with eager anticipation for their scheduled time to go to her classroom, which they see as a safe oasis where they are treated with respect and support. When we have friends over for dinner, she goes above and beyond to create an extensive menu and a memorable evening for everyone. No doubt, this same energy will be focused on our adopted child. She will skillfully create a safe, loving and creative environment for our adopted child.

Michael in Sunny’s Eyes
Michael is a wonderful husband (I know, I know, I am biased! But this statement is so true!). I write to his parents and thank them often for their wonderful son. Now, I would like the opportunity to see him be a great father to our adopted child. I know he is going to be a great father because I see him everyday teaching children music with patience and gentleness. I see in his students’ eyes and hear in their own words that they are treated with respect and kindness. He also brings the best musician out of each child. In addition, “Uncle Michael” is an uncle to our 14 nieces and nephews and many of our friends’ kiddos as well. “Uncle Michael” is on high demand whenever we visit them because he is available to be their uncle and showers them with love. I can’t wait to raise a child together with Michael and see him bringing out the best in our child as he does with other people’s children.

Extended Families
We both come from big and diverse families. Our adoptive child will have many cousins, uncles, aunts, and both sets of grand parents. Also, our adoptive child will have cousins that will speak English as a common family language, but he/she will get to hang out with cousins that speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, and Korean. Our extended families value family time and we visit each other’s homes as much as we can. It’s a celebration whenever we get together. Many of our extended families have lived in a variety of countries in the past or are still working and living overseas. Working overseas has had a profound effect on all of us and shapes our thoughts, attitudes, and outlook on life.

Thank You!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and considering us as your baby’s adoptive parents. We hope this gives you some understanding about who we are as a family and what we value as a family. Please take a look at our full profile book for more information about us! We also look forward to the opportunity to get to know you as well.

With Our Hearts,
Sunny and Michael
