I adopted a little girl 18 years ago through A Act of Love Adoptions. I am a very open person, but I was hesitant about an open adoption because I didn’t really know my birthmother or understand if she was going to be a healthy and safe person in my child’s life. I needed time to get to know her before I completely opened up our private life by giving our address, phone number and last name. A Act of Love Adoptions was very professional in handling correspondence between our birthmother and us. When she or I wanted to have a phone conversation, we would call A Act of Love, and they would organize a conference call. This arrangement came in very helpful when medical questions for our daughter would come up like allergies, family medical history etc. We were able to pass letters and gifts through the Agency to each other. Over the 18 years, there were times that our birthmother was doing well, and other times when she was struggling with unhealthy life choices.
Each adoption is different. As adoptive parents we each have to decide along the journey, what is the best option of openness for our own personal situation. There is not a wrong or right way. As the years have passed and we have had time to develop relationships and trust with our birthmother, we slowly added more openness like sharing our cell number and email address.
